Verb tense
Hello,
Can I use past and present together? I use can because it is a fact ,a reality, but when I speak does it sound correct?
When I was dismissed from Tehran university because of my political activity, my brother told me if I can't study in Iran I can study abroad and encouraged me to continue my field of study in Canada.

Thank you for reply. Since it is really hard to judge whether a person should use the past or present tense? Now, I've got the point, it is a reported speech. Life is easier now when you understand something.
