Verb subject agreement-

Which one of these are correct:
set 1

1. One of the most intelligent students who scores full marks is John.

2. One of the most intelligent students who score full marks is John.

set 2

a. One of these most intelligent students whose example is being followed is John.

b. One of these most intelligent students whose example are being followed is John.

From my perspective 1 should be correct : because the entire phrase upto who forms singular subject
but the answer is 2. Kindly explain

In the second set answer given is a. I agree with this answer. But if this answer is correct then how can answer 2 in the first set be correct?

One of these most intelligent students, whose example is being followed, is John.

I see whose example is being followed as a non-defining relative clause.

Am I correct?
