Verb "spend"

" Sometimes, they spend a lot of money to buy rare stamps. "

I think " to buy " should be changed to " buying ".

If it's correct sentence grammatically, why is "to buy" used instead of " buying " ?

Pls let me know.

Thanks

Terry
