Verb problem

What troubles me, however, is the phrase 'followed by lactate', which does not seem to fit neatly into the structure. Is this phrase another 'application'? If so, it would be much more clear to write:

Still, the continuation is also troublesome: applications are to detect and monitor.

For some reason, this gives me the impression that the applications are (supposed) to detect, i.e., the idiom "to be to" used in the sense of obligation.

Tiny point, but "... applications are the detection and monitoring of ..." seems better
