Verb Plus Preposition

I wonder if it is compulsory to place a prepostion after the main verb 'attempt'.
Are these sentences grammatically correct?
1. My first attempt painting on canvas with acrylics.
2. My first attempt at painting on canvas with acrylics.
3. My first attempt to paint on canvas with acrylics.
It would be more helpful if you can give a brief explanation or examples about when a preposition has to be used or omitted after a main verb.

Thank you in advance for answering my questions.
