Verb placement correct

Hi there!

If I have quite a long sentence, is it ok to place a verb right after the subject?
For example, can I say

Experiments were performed on the development of membranes with improved productivity and additional arrays of pores and optimization of membrane characteristics.

or do I have to say

Experiments on the development of membranes with improved productivity and additional arrays of pores and optimization of membrane characteristics were conducted.

I mean to say that experiments on developement and optimization of membranes with improved productivity and additional arrays of pores were conducted.
