Verb form- engineering

Hi everyone. Is this sentece correct:
"As a result of this expansion further fracturing of the oxide could occur in a continuous process."
I thought as the act of breaking is not a continious one, maybe the use of Fracture in ing-form is incorrect.
Thanks in advance.
