Verb associated with "exam"

hi,,
this is my first posting..
can anyone please clarify as to what should be the right verb associated with exam/ test. I have heard people use "write an exam", "take an exam", "give an exam", "appear for an exam". I guess the last one would be the most appropriate. But what about the others, and what should be the actual usage?
pls reply...

Hi and welcome to EF. -- For the test-taker: 'write/take/sit an examination' are all common in various quarters. For the test-giver: 'give' is the only suitable verb that I can think of offhand.

First, are you speaking of the test-taker or the test-giver?--

In addition to the previous answers: the person who devises the questions 'sets' the exam.
