Verb

"Don't go sit in there or the paint may spot your trousers." Is the verb correct? Thanks.

Top answer

As a verb, “spot” sounds like an understatement. Unless they are old working clothes, they could be ruined. The visual effect is of a small amount of paint being deposited on the leg.

You don't need the words "go" or "in". Your wording is awkward and would be better as: "Don't sit there or the paint may stain your trousers." or "Don't sit there or you may get paint on your trousers."
