Hi guys
Is 'I have always assumed' in the passage below used correctly? Looking at the present tense verbs in bold print which I've capitalised and italicised, I believe that the speaker 'still assumes' what he spoke about at that time. Therefore, my thinking is that "I have always assumed..." should have been used. Is my reasoning on the correct track?
"I ALWAYS ASSUMED that, on the path of attaining Buddhahood, one IS certain to meet some great trial that WILL demand of him that he be willing to give up his life; only then CAN one become a Buddha. And already, just as the sutra STATES, I HAVE been cursed and vilified, attacked with swords and staves, rocks and tiles, and banished again and again. I therefore BELIEVE that I am reading the Lotus Sutra with my entire being. My faith INCREASES all the more and I AM confident of my future existence."

I would agree with you Yoong Liat, if he the writer still does assume that. Perhaps he was talking about the assumptions he made when he began his spiritual journey?

As I have indicated, all the other verbs are in present tense, so I'm certain when the speaker said those word, he 'still believes' what he was talking ab

Grammar GeekI would agree with you Yoong LiatI don't know how to be more clear than to say that I agree with you. I was simply trying to suggest a reason that might explain why the writer used the form shown.
