Vases dressed with autumn leaves

Hello,

In the book Parrot and Olivier in America (Peter Carey), I came across the following text:

"The arches into the dining room were trimmed with green and autumn leaves. Entering, one was immediately confronted by a great number of vases also dressed with autumn leaves..."

Context: Olivier, a French nobleman, has been invited for lunch by his American friend, a rich banker, Mr Peek. Olivier describes Peek's mansion.

I don't understand, if the vases were decorate/painted with autumn leaves on the outside, or if there were autumn leaves arranged in the vases. Could you, please, explain it to me?

Thank you very much for your help.
