varieties of disease ?

Varieties (does this mean many types ? )of disease X requiring expensive special treatment have become less common during the past decade.

Can disease X have many types ? Let's us the disease X is AIDS. Can AIDS have different types ?

Why the word is in plural when itself already is ?

According to the dicitionary,

#1 A different type of something:
The article was about the different varieties of Spanish spoken in South America

#2 many different types of things or people:
She does a variety of fitness activities.
