'variances'?

Hi,

Please have a look at this:



Manage inventories.

In normal times the focus of operations tends to be on customer satisfaction, low cost and low manufacturing variances.



What does 'variance' mean here? (I've looked it up in dictionaries but still not very clear about its meaning here).
