Vocabulary

' variance' vs' variation', 'expenditure'vs'expense'. 'legimate'vs'legal'

I'm really confused about the use of these words. Are there any differences between:

- 'variance' and' variation'

- 'expenditure' and' expense'

- 'legiatimate' and' legal'

Are there anything I should keep in mind before deciding to use the former or the latter word in a certain context?

Thank you for your help

If you don't mind, could you please help me to correct my question. I have tried on my best, however I think it is not a good expression.
