Variable VS factor

Is 'variable' synonymous with 'factor'? To me the definition of factor is: 'one of the elements of a cause which contributes to a partcular result'.

If they are not synonymous, can you please give me a basic definition of what 'variable' means because the dictionary didn't help me?

In math (e.g. algebra), a variable is an unknown quantity in an equation. For example: X and Y are variables in the following linear equation. One possible solution for the variables is the pair: X=1 and Y=5. Another is X= 5 and Y = 3.

X + 2Y = 11
