Vanity items

The following sentences are about if organ transplant from an living person should be allowed and I am not sure what the underlined parts imply exactly even though I looked up the words in a dictionary.

1.Peole have children for many reasons. They are vanity items for many people, an extension of ego.

2. Today the transplant is part of the culture- conceptually dazzling, familiar in a weired way but morallly unassimilated.

3.The death of a sinle well movitivated and completely healthy living doner almost stop the clock worldwide.

4Transplants become a matter of high-stakes risk calculation for the doners as well as the recipient and the intense emotions involved sometime have people playing long shots.
