Vanish

Hi,

A cargo ship which vanished into the Atlantic for more than a fortnight was hijacked by armed men who ordered it to sail for Africa, Russia's defence minister said today, announcing the arrest of the eight suspected pirates.

Is "vanishing" an act that can last for a fortnight?
Would it be better if "vanished" were changed to "went missing"?

Thanks

After it vanished it wasn't seen for a fortnight. You could say "went missing in the Atlantic" but it isn't really better, just different.

It would probably more correct, but your quotation is from a news article - journalists are often more concerned with dramatic impact than accuracy.
