Vocabulary

valance and canopy

Q 1. Can anyone explain the difference between a valance and a canopy?
A valance is defined as a length of decorative drapery attached to the canopy or frame of the bed, while the canopy itself is a ornamental cloth hung over a bed or throne. What is the difference between a valance and a canopy then? Please explain.

Q 2. Also, another definition of valance in the Oxford dictionary says that it is a sheet that is designed to hang down over the mattress and sides of a bed. I can't picture how this sheet hangs. Does it hang from the frame of the bed, or is it a bedsheet?

Thank you!
