Vain vs. futile

Hi,

what is the difference between vain and futile, please?
I know we can say "vain / futile attempt", but I can't tell the difference between these two...

They both mean the same thing in that context - ineffectual, serving no purpose. vain also has another meaning that futile does not - self-centered, conceited, excessively proud. CJ
