"vague" idiom

Hi,
  • fly by the seat of your pants [*]
According to my longman, this idiom means to have to deal with a situation by guessing what to do, because you know very little about it [+], but.
What does this phrase mean literally? How come [*] means [+]? :-)

Example (just in case my question does not make sense to you).
  • to have ants in one's pants -
its (literal) meaning should be very clear even to a learner with a rudimentary sense of humor/imagination? :-) As for [*], it seems much more "involved" to me... Hope this idiom has NO bad connotations/etc.?
