"VAC" "VDC" versus "Vac" and "Vdc"

Curious if there is any hard / fast rule that states that must use VAC [volts alternating current] instead of Vac, and likewise VDC [volts direct current] instead of Vdc? When by themselves, the AC and DC are preferred, but have seen both instances [upper and lower cases] when they are following the "V". Thanks!

It is the mixture of caps and small letters that is confusing (I doubt whether there is a rule; it is a matter of usage in that field). What do reputable texts on the subject use? Use those.
