Using would to discuss the past

Many times now have I heard native speakers use would to talk about the past...

When I was a child, my father and I would go swimming in the lake next to our house.

I wanot to know if this is correct.

I think I understand but I expect there to be an 'if' in the sentence.

My father and I would go swimming in the lake near our house if the weather was warm and sunny.

Is this correct?

maybe you can explain further.

The use of 'if' introduces a condition that needed to be fulfilled in order for the swimming to take place.

Without 'if' it is simply a description of a repeated event in the past.

We would go swimming in the lake = we used to go swimming in the lake.
