Grammar

Using vs. By using

I will make up illuminating sentences which, hopefully, are going to make me clear about this issue.

(1)
"I passed the test using a crib sheet."
or
(2)
"I passed the test by using a crib sheet."

( A )
"I cut the rope using a knife."
or
( B )
"I cut the rope by using a knife."

What are differences, or rather, what sentences are grammatically incorrect?

Thanks in advance.

All of them are grammatically correct. The prepositional phrase, by + gerund, emphasizes the technique or means. The present participial phrase modifies the subject, and has more emphasis on the activity.
