Using 'vernacular'

Hi, I'm having a hard time with the word "vernacular." I've looked up the meaning several times but I was wondering if it's correct to use like this:

While Spanish is used in the vernacular, English is the official language.

The problem is with the fixed phrase 'in the vernacular'. Since Spanish is the vernacular, it sounds odd. A one-word change will solve the problem, though: While Spanish is used as the vernacular, English is the official language.
