Using unless

Hi,

How to use unless in past: Unless he verified the claim, he would never be able to guarantee its accuracy. (since the first half is past, can the second half contain 'would')

#2 Again, can 'would' be used in past tense in this manner: He would not disregard their atrocities or the corruption which prevailed in their regimes. (instead of 'did not', I have used 'would not'.)
Also in past: They would admit neither X nor Y. (instead of they admitted neither x nor y).

Grammatically, all your sentences are correct in the right contexts. Would retains some of its old meaning in the last two sentences and expresses volition, or the lack of it. CB
