Using 'to' with 'reply'

Hi there

I just want to check if it is wrong to omit the 'to' when using 'reply' as follows:

"I will reply to him later"

"She did not want to reply to me"

In American English, you need the "to."

It's wrong. It is the verb answer that acts that way.

I'll reply to him later.
I'll answer him later.
