Using thus

How do we use 'thus' in a sentence like this?

As the man began to thus disturb him, he turned away.
As the man began to disturb him thus, he turned away.

I am using 'thus' to mean 'in this manner.' Where in the sentence is it correct?

'Thus' here sounds rather stilted, but both positions are OK for the adverb. It could also immediately follow 'began'.
