Using they as a singular non-gendered pronoun

Whether it's correct or not, do you ever use they as a singular non-gendered pronoun in your informal speech? How about in writing?

In other words, would you ever use the following sentence? "A person should do the right thing, no matter where they are."

If you answer this, could you also say which form of English you use? (British, American, Australian, etc)
