Using them or they etc

The pronouns his/her should be replaced with them/they etc. Correct?

Top answer

NO! 'His/her' are the third person singular possessive pronouns, often used as a set for single humans of unspecified ***: 'someone left his/her book in the classroom'. More popular is the use of the 3rd person plural 'their': 'someone left their book in the classroom'.
