using their own cup/cups

Hello. I'm curious which of 'using their own cup' or 'using their own cup' is grammatically correct. It was in my English test, and the answer was 'using their own cups'.
The situation was this: a boy and girl decides to bring cups to school to protect the environment.
Is 'using their own cup' totally wrong? Tell me your opinions.

I wrote 'using their own cup' because in the article we learnt school, there was a pharse 'survive in their own way'.
