Using the word to.

Hello

A friend of mine is studying English and asked me a question about using the word to. Their example was:

They let us treat the wounds
vs
They let us to treat the wounds

I am a native speaker, but I don't know the technical reason why to is not used in that particular sentence. I thought it might be something to do with 'let'. If you replaced let with allowed then to is required.

I would love to know the grammatical reason behind this so I can help them out.

Thanks

Your reasoning and explanation are correct. Let is indeed the reason. The plain/bare infinitive is used with let and also with active forms of make: Let's go !
