Using the word "Appointment"

I have some confusion about how to use "Appointment".

I always thought that "Appointment" means "formal appointment". i.e. business appointment.

"I have an appointment with someone at 3pm" sounds very formal to me.

Is there a word to describe "informal appointment"? (e.g. dating, go to movies, hang out with friends)

Or maybe my understanding is wrong?

Thanks.

You're right, 'appointment' is rather formal. ' I have a date ' is casual, or you can use the verb to indicate it: I'm meeting someone for coffee. I've arranged to meet the gang at 8.
