Using "The" with animal names?

Which one of these is correct and why ?

1. The peacock is a beautiful bird

I think you cannot use the second one, unless you use the plural form e.g. Peacocks are beautiful birds

A peacock is a beautiful bird. Also common. Think of this as 'any peacock'.
