Using the phrasal verb "pick up"

I was wondering how to use the phrasal verb "pick up" if I want to say that I have recently started playing the piano.

"Pick up" is used quite loosely in English to express different meanings.
Can you pick up something quick for dinner on the way home? = To get something convenient for dinner.
