Using 'the' for classification purposes

I have a question about article - the.

Why do we say for example,

'The tiger is a dangerous species',

but we don't say,

'The Heineken is my favourite beer.'

Why do we use the article 'the' when talking about a classification of animal (for example), but we don't use it to talk about a classification of beer?

Thanks in advance. Emotion: smile

' The brand name is Heineken , not " The Heineken, " and we are not talking about a particular bottle of beer. We say France is my favorite country. Austria is my favorite country.

The brand name is Heineken, not "The Heineken," and we are not talking about a particular bottle of beer.

We say
France is my favorite country.
Austria is my favorite country.
The United Kingdom is my favorite country.
The Netherlands is my favorite country.

This thing about articles is very confusing for an adult learner - there are myriad situations, with and without the article, and you just have to learn them by experience. One way around it, to some extent, is to always put the article (definite or indefinite) in when in doubt, even if you make an error, because US English is very article-heavy - the odds are in your favor it you put the article

The above are correct, but note that the following are also correct - these different situations have to be learned by experience:

The France that I knew in my youth was nothing like today's France.

The Austria that I knew when I was a child was very different from Austria today.

Go to that vacation tours website and click on United Kingdom.

Netherlands, United

Thanks Anonymous. Yes, articles are extremely confusing, and equally confusing when teaching it. I'm actually an English teacher, but STILL asking questions all the time on 'why' something is the way it is.

Native English speakers 'just know', but explaining WHY is a whole skill in itself.

The United Kingdom - that is the actual way the name of the country is used in sentences.

I suppose it is because it references a group of states or kingdoms. Many countries formed by a collection or with a proper name of more than one word use

The offiial name of some countries is a description of its political form:

Germany - the Federal Republic of Germany
China - the People's Republic of China
America - the United States of America
Great Britain - the United Kingdom of Great B

Thanks AlpheccaStars.

I also read that if a country has a 'noun' in the name, then it takes 'the'. If there is no noun, then it's just the singular name, like Greece or Italy.

I researched it yesterday.

Cup cakeI also read that if a country has a 'noun' in the name,
These are nouns: France, Italy, Germany, China, Russia, Austria, Australia, New Zealand, India, Tibet, Ethiopia, Egypt, South Africa, and Norway.

They all are proper nouns.

Oh, I should've said 'common nouns' rather than proper nouns.
