Here's the sentence: Would you mind if we went out to eat?
Could you also say, "Would you mind if we go out to eat?"
I think it sounds wrong, but I can't put my finger on why. "Would" is a conditional, but "went" is past... Is the "go" version wrong because we put the "if" in front of it? Could someone please explain this to me?
Top answer
You can say either. 'Would' takes a conditional form, but it is actually a form of politeness, not condition.
