Using "The"

Why do we use "the" when saying:

"I go the movies every weekend".

But not when we say:

"I go to school everyday".

Top answer

I go to the movies every weekend. I go to school every day. They are fixed idioms.

  • I go to the movies every weekend.
  • I go to school every day.
  • They are fixed idioms.
  • It is also correct to say I go to the school every day , but you wouldn't be attending classes in that case and therefore the sentence sounds quite odd even though it is grammatically correct.
  • There is no special reason for everything people say.

I go to the movies/the theater every weekend.

"the movies" is a motion-picture theater.
