Using that and which

He survived the nightmare that was African jungle.
He survived the nightmare which was African jungle.

He survived that nightmare which was African jungle.

Is it okay to use 'that' and 'which' in this manner to dramatize things? Are all three sentences correct?

In this sort of use, only the clearly restrictive 'that' seems natural to me: He survived the nightmare that was the African jungle. The others seem confused.
