Using square brackets in quotes

1a. Alice Cooper famously said that "from the moment [he] leave [his] house or hotel room, the public owns [him]."

1b. Alice Cooper famously said that "from the moment I [he] leave [leaves] my [his] house or hotel room, the public owns me [him]."

2a. The witness said: "[The policeman] hit me."

2b. The witness said: "He [the policeman] hit me."

3a. Hedy Lamarr once said: "Most people save all their lives and leave [their money] to somebody else."

3b. Hedy Lamarr once said: "Most people save all their lives and leave it [their money] to somebody else."

4a. "[Electricity] is really just organized lightning."

Different websites have example sentences that are like my 'a' sentences and other websites are like my 'b' sentences

Why wouldn't you just give the direct quote?

You usually only use square brackets if you're adding your own word to the quote. You would only do this if you need to add something to help the reader understand the quote.

For example, a direct quote may be: "I took the chickens out and put them in the yard."
