It's good for their listening abilities.

It engages their interest. It's fun.

I firstly feel that songs are a non-threatening way to get the entire class involved in something fun. They are a great warmer, because if you have punctuality problems, students can come trickling in while you are playing the song. I try to play music I think my students will know and they always light up when they recognize a song. Lastly, anything that students find interesting and engaging is a valuable learning tool. Songs can work across a variety of learning styles and that is the primary reason I think they are valuable in the classroom.
