Using "means of" in the singular?

Hello

I've read on the Merriam Webster dictionary site that the word "means", although it's plural, can be used with a singular construction.
Does it mean that you can say, for instance, "credit card is a means of payment"? Is that sentence correct, and if so, would a native speaker use it?

Thanks for any information.
