Using quotation marks

"This is an example quote" -Source

If I want to quote just the words "an" and "quote," should I use single quotation marks or double? I feel weird using double quotes for such small words.

There's no need to feel weird. The length ( or shortness) of a word has nothing to do with using single or double quotation marks.
