I sometime explain to students using sentences in an explanation, but I am sometimes comfused about the punctuation. The quotes are not for speech. For example:
In the academia world, it is always best to be polite, but in everyday situations, we only say “You're welcome.” or sometimes we say nothing at all and just smile.
Do I need a period in this quote, or is it a bad sentence? Thanks!
Top answer
No period and no capitalization is needed within the quotation.
