Using present adverbs of time, for telling story in the past tense

i want to know if we can use "present tense adverbs" for narrating stories in the past tense?!
for example,

In the right context, 'now' can have the idea of 'at this (past) time, but not before'. Postule downed the whiskey, straightened his tie, and took a deep breath. Now he was ready to face Mary.
