As far as I know, that is not a preposition. It's either a conjunction or a demonstrative (pronoun).

When it's a conjunction, it's required in some situations and not in some other situations. To be able to determine where it is required or optional needs (that) you read and listen to English more.
For example, it's optional in above sentence.
And in sentence below, it is required:
The English is a language that is used in many countries nowadays.

When it's a demonstrative, it's required always, to me. For example in the sentence; that is a good book, you cannot omit the that because without it the sentence would be incorrect.
