Using -ing after preposition "for"

The grammatical rule is that after a preposition one should use the -ing form. Why then the sentence: "I came to this university for studying English" is incorrect?

You are correct that 'studying' would follow 'for'. However, the sentence is incorrect as you should have said 'I came to this university to study English'.
