Using 'Had' in a Sentence

Hi,

I know we use 'had' to describe a past event that happened before another past event.

"John had lived in England for six years before his company transferred him to Canada."

However, I have read many articles on the popular websites where writers used "had" although there was no case of describing a past event before a past event.

"Michelle had asked her friends to come over."

Can you please explain me when I need to use "had" + past participle in addition to using it to write a sentence in past perfect tense.
