Using ‘get rid of’ and ‘competent’

Have I correctly used the expression ‘get rid of’ and ‘competent’ in the following sentences?

My point is not to get rid of English but to attain quality education and lifelong learning. It would be better if the learners speak the language that they are competent to use.
