Using "FOR" to express reason.

Maybe using "FOR" to express reason is not a very productive construction in English, but I'd like to know anyways how to use the particle FOR to express reason, not purpose. Do you have an explanation other than the fact that it could be idiomatic rather than a grammar rule.

For example:

1. A couple was caught FOR selling drugs.

2. The player was punished FOR calling the referee a "thief"

3. He broke up with her FOR cheating on him.

4. The teenagers were expelled FOR truanting school.

The only explanation I got from the examples above is that "FOR" is used to mean reason when it goes in passive constructions.

Thanks in advance for you help!

No. Your third example isn't in the passive voice. Passive voice has nothing to do with it. 'for' can be used to give a reason in the active voice as well, for example,

The coach punished the player for calling the referee a thief.
