Using "FOR"

Hi friends,

I learned about using "for" and "since" that we use them to mention a time. for instance

I have been serving as a driver for past 4 months.

But when I read the sentence given below I am confused. Can you please tell me about explaining time as in the following sentence.

"The representative said Jackson hails from Old town and was serving as a driver for past 4 months."
